WNH is located in Winfield, Kansas, a community of 12,000 just 45 minutes southeast of Wichita. Winfield is an attractive community with a four year college and an exceptionally low incidence of crime. Our service population is approximately 40,000 and the area boasts a diverse economy with a growing number of manufacturers and services. In short, Winfield provides excellent cultural, recreational, educational, and employment opportunities. WNH is classified as a Critical Access, not-for-profit community general hospital licensed for 25 acute care and swing beds. Hospital acute care admissions in 2014, including newborns, totaled 1,207 plus 803 placed in observation status. There were 1,288 surgeries, 1,096 endoscopies, 245 newborn deliveries, 8,135 visits to the emergency room, 4,120 home health visits, 62 admissions to swing-beds, 13,565 rural health clinic visits and 38,965 other outpatient services. The hospital is certified by CMS and is self supporting, receiving no tax subsidies. WNH is fortunate to have a well diversified and excellent medical staff including 19 members on the active staff and a growing number of consulting physicians and allied professionals currently in excess of 60. Two new doctors are scheduled to arrive in the fall of 2015. Because of constant change in health care delivery, WNH has been pro-active in providing new services. In addition to acute care, the hospital provides orthopedic and same-day surgery, skilled swing beds, home healthcare, audiology, cardiac rehabilitation, wound care, rheumotology, infusion therapy and many other diagnostic and therapeutic services. The hospital operates five rural health clinics in Cowley, Elk and Chautauqua counties and an occupational health program to assist local business and industry. WNH has also developed cooperative arrangements with other providers for cancer treatment and renal dialysis. An up-to-date infrastructure has always been a hallmark of WNH. Since 1998, improvements include major expansion/renovation of the emergency and radiology departments, lobby, ambulance facilities, medical-surgical floor, surgical suites and the Family Birthing Center. A state of the art cancer radiation treatment center opened in 2001 and an organization-wide computer system including clinical records was installed in 2003. The Physicians Pavilion and Winfield Healthcare Center provide medical office space on the WNH campus for a number of active staff and consulting physicians. Recent improvements include a $5 million replacement of patient rooms in 2009, a $6.5 million upgrade to the Family Birthing Center and the hospital energy system in 2012, and $1 million in improvements to the surgery department in 2014. Much of this was accomplished with financial support from the community facilitated by William Newton Healthcare Foundation and WNH Auxiliary. Meeting the health needs of the people in the area remains our highest priority.
